    Thor rocker cover breather tube

    Hi

I need to replace my oil separator and one of the threads on rr.net states that the tube itself can be removed just by pulling it off.

Others seem to say you have to remove the rocker cover and drill the old separator out if you can't get it out any other way.

So my question is, can you remove the tube or not?

    Thanks
    Steve

I have been wanting to do this job myself and from what I've read the tube is supposed to just pull off. There is a metal clip holding the hose on, which is called a clic clamp, here's how they work, (audio is in German but it shows the mechanism very clearly).
    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVvxx15-fO0]HANET ingenious 798-2 Hose Clamp Pliers for CLIC-type hose clamps - YouTube[/ame]

I would get a new plastic seperator before attempting to remove the existing one, it would have to be brittle after all that heat.
I read one guy managed to remove his in one piece by spraying WD40 and using needle nose pliers very gently moving from side to side to start movement, the theory is if you don't try to rush it, it will eventually come out in tact.
Others have had to drill it out after breaking it, but you would like to think it could be removed without too much drama.
I'll be interested to hear how you go with it, I want to have a crack at mine soon.

    Hi Peter,

I have already managed to snap mine off but I now have a replacement on hand.

I don't want to just yank at the tube and break something else, though I am going to try drilling and an eziout as my fist approach

    Hi

Been searching for pics and found this one

RANGE ROVER WORLD South Africa: Hevac and rocker cover oil control

Looks to me like the breather tube is part of the casting, so I doubt it it will just pull off

Looks like the intake plenum and rocker cover(s) are coming off unless my drill / eziout strategy works !

the oil separator sits inside the housing and can be removed without removing the rocker cover... but it may be crusted in.. some white spirit (shellite) sprayed around it and left to soak for a couple of minutes... pressure pack disc brake cleaner is also effective, suggestion: when you've removed the breather hose, just push fit a short (30mm) length of hose over the housing and dribble the solvent down then try to dislodge the separator by working it with pliers and described above..New part No. is ERR4563.

I would be interested to know if when the insert is free to move will it rotate within the tube or is it just an up down movement to remove it.

    Wayne,

I tried some gentle lifting with needle nose pliers and it snapped off instantly

Much like the way the damn washer jet inlets snapped off when i tried to remove them for cleaning !

I will try some shellite (lighter fluid) and see if it helps !

    HI

My current thinking is to use the shellite or WD40 and then use something like a feeler gauge to work around the edges and see if i can dislodged it that way.

Tomorrow battle will be joined and I will let everyone know the outcome
