Have had a SE for several years and have crossed and circumnavigated Australia several times with her. She is getting a bit tired so I looked around for a HSE and found one local with a brush bar and very tidy to look at. Problems: No light on the dash and the heater O rings have gone. Good news - it only cost me $5,500 so I'm way ahead. Has a throaty exhaust and drives beautifully.

I figure I can fix the dash light problem myself. I understand I am talking about replacing the dash PCB and that will give me all dash lights.

The O Rings is another problem. Anyone got any idea of costs thru a workshop?

    Welcome Kev.
PM me your postal address and I will send you some heater core o-rings. No charge... you can buy me a beer/coffee when you are down Canberra way sometime.

Not a difficult job to do yourself. There are a few write-ups on the web showing how you can do it without removing the dash, one at rangerovers.net as I recall.
I have done it both ways (on different P38's) and should have a write-up of it somewhere at paulp38a.com

To get someone else to do the job for you is 1-2 days work, and you can't be sure of what they broke along the way. If you are happy to remove the instrument cluster to fix the lighting, there are just a few more steps to remove the whole dash and properly fix the HC o-rings

Post up some pics of your HSE and we can try to guess who it belonged to before you

    Ccheers, Paul.

    G'day Kev and welcome!

I echo Paul's comments. Both are DIY's and much cheaper to do yourself.

I'm sure you'll no doubt find the forum a great place to be!

    Cheers

Welcome to the P38 addiction circle
You might not necessarily need to replace the PCB in the instrument cluster. The globes are individually replaceable. They are available at most of the usual auto outlets. IIRC Narva sell them in blister packs. You can also buy LEDs from Jaycar with T5/T10 wedge fittings which also plug straight in. If you use the custom google search there's a diagram of the PCB showing where the globes are inserted... do a similar search also on ww.rangerovers.net http://www.rangerovers.net/repairdetails/binnacle.html
    cheers

EDIT: Re. no dash lights... I'm presuming that you have checked that the dimming switch on the indicator stalk isn't set to "low"... just asking :-)

Yes I have checked the dimmer. The guy I brought it off has taken it to MR Autos @ Kippa Ring and their answer is a new dash.

Hoges, I take your point. Can you tell me this.. If the dash lights go does it follow that all lights in the centre dash go as well.

    Hi Kev,

Don't know about the lights, but I just had the heater core and all HEVAC motors replaced, $2500 the lot. That included repairing parts of the dash butchers had attacked in the past .

Not cheap cars to keep going if you want to do it properly.

    Good luck with tour purchase.

Rob, well that gives me a bench mark. Thanks and yes they are expensive if you do it properly. I did everything recomended by LR Mechs with my old SE -will try and do the same with the HSE. It is a better vehicle to do up. I plan to go around Australia with this one as well as part of my Mothers 95th birthday in ALbany WA in November and the centenary of the Gallipoli fleet leaving Albany. Car has to be in top condition by then.
