When I did mine last year I also snapped the drive shaft at the same time....ouch! I bought a 2nd hand replacement shaft with CV joint still assembled from a local LR wrecker. All up from memory around $120.

What's best advice on practical maintenance on the CVs to ensure they're as good as can be?

Make sure the rubber boot is in good nick. If you find it torn CV should be dismantled, cleaned and regreased.

If the boot is ok, no maintenance needed.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."
