Thread: brakes question before I spend more money

A dead ABS pump will not cause you to lose brakes. P38's are designed to stop even if the ABS fails.

I'd suggest you have a gems Rangie, if so you might want to replace the mighty plastic o-ring with a suitable metal replacement (of which many here know more about than I).

Yes, it could be the pump. But it could also be the accumulator (the black sphere near the pump). Or it could be the brake modulator needs rebuilding if you have a pre 1999 RR and the plastic disc has broken inside.

Does the pump run pretty well continuously?

The rebuild kit to replace plastic washers with shiny Stainless ones is ready and waiting to go on, I have just changed the accumulator for a brand new one, that was my first guess,

But the pump doesn't run at all, with ignition or engine running, which is why I am now suspecting the relay, but this is my first taste of the brake system in the p38, so it's all just what I have read here.

1995 vintage so yes to plastic washers

Stick some wire in the relay spade bits to manually bypass it to see if the pump works and go from there.

So atm you have un-assisted brakes?

That sounds correct. I know even our TD5 Defender's brakes will work perfectly with the ABS module not working.

Now that's a good idea, I feel like a fool for not thinking of it myself, does anyone know which spades to jump start it, will I damage anything trying out a few options?

Will try that if I get chance after work tonight.

Brakes will just stop me at the end of the drive, if I start early and have a strong enough leg, unassisted would be my best guess

My bad, I may have given the wrong idea, I was driving back from work when the warning lights came on, car still stopped fine and I was thinking it was another interesting electrical problem with the display, the next morning there was almost no braking, it will still pull up but I would never try to drive on the road with it.

You need to bridge 30 and 87. Might also be worth checking maxi fuse 2.

If that works the pressure switch would be next to test.
