Is Melbourne the used P38 update capital???

After missing out on the 01 HSE for sale here in Sydney (and maybe it was worth giving it a miss) I can't find anything like it local that isn't twice the price it should be. Plenty in Victoria; I phoned about a black with beige leather 01 HSE and it sounded okay and the owner was realistic about price.

I always seem the bridesmaid never the bride with buying a P38

I put a deposit down on a P38 4.0 SE several years ago in Melbourne and it turned out to be a dog of a car. Lucky to get my deposit back. Therefore I am reluctant to buy a car without first seeing it and can't justify spending time and money on interstate flights for what may be a fruitless search. Get someone local to look at it for me? Well, I guess so, but it puts a lot of pressure on whoever I get to look at it.

Two of my Disco II purchases were meant to be P38s. Each time I gave up on the P38 and widened my search. I liked the DII but never was entirely happy with either of them.

This time I am trying to refrain and just stick to a 2000 or 2001 HSE with fewer than 200,000km and some kind of service history or indication somebody cared enough to spend a bit of time and money on it..

I must be patient, I must be patient....

Sometimes in life you have to take a punt, I would have been all over the last one you discussed like a rash with $$ in my back pocket. If you want cheap then be ready to strike or pay the Redbook price of around $13 to 14k for what you are after.

If you do narrow it down to a preferred P38, give the forum a hoy. There's sure to be one of us Melbournites ready and willing to have a nosy at a prospective P38 purchase - with the sole expectation of saying "yes it is worthy of a flight to Melbourne for a sticky beak yourself". Then there is no recrimination.

It was the first one I'd seen, and I wasn't going to take a punt on needing $8k of new engine on an $8k car. That is $16k, much more than it is worth. So yeah, if I'd schooled myself a bit better on the foibles of P38s and had more time to inspect it the first time more thoroughly, then I might've taken a punt.

By the way, I am not so sure about the $13k-$14k figure. That might be what Redbook says they are worth, but I'm not sure people are paying that much. The guy selling the car up here had to keep dropping his price to get buyers interested. The shmick 01 HSE in Melbourne, black/beige combo, is at a $11k asking price.

Anyway, I am going to cool my heels and give this a bit more time. I have waited this long for a P38, may as well wait a little longer...

I think Melbourne is the 2nd hand capital of Land Rovers full stop. I flew from Brissy to buy my last two there--

    Hi

When I was searching for mine I noticed there seemed to be a lot more in Melbourne than anywhere else.

Maybe they had a better sales team?

I looked for six months and in the end I took a punt and I also paid top dollar for mine, but it was in very good nick and had gas injection.

Oh yeah and I paid a deposit sight unseen, which I could easily have lost if the car was not as described and it was a dealer sale not private.

I got mine from Melbourne! Drove it back up to Townsville.

If you don't want to fly to inspect, do what I've done 5 times to suss out the lemons from the oranges.

Google "State Roads Vehicle Inspections" - they are not a government organization as the name would suggest. For around $200 they will go over it with a fine tooth comb (even doing paint depth tests).

Best value for money, plus they are very honest - they don't hide anything.

Hmmm... if there is anyone in Melbourne near Mentone who knows their P38s and doesn't mind having a sticky beak, send me a PM. There's a slab or whatever is your favourite tipple in it for you time... if that's okay?

    Hi 4 X 4 V8,
Really starting to think that Melbourne is the P38 capital, I bought my first P38 in Melbourne, sight unseen, paid a deposit picked it up Xmas eve, got the ferry over to Tasmania, did two weeks of touring around and then drove it back to Perth, never missed a beat. Perfect vehicle, kept it for three years and sold it for more than I paid for it.

    Cheers Marty.

Well, Melbourne is the capital of Class, and good taste all round, unlike certain slums north of the Murray
