4.0 & 4.6 P38s with Thor have the same inlet manifold as the D2 (same part #).

4.0 & 4.6 P38s share the same inlet duct & air mass meter too.

I just looked up the parts catalogues for the details.

I really doubt the ECU would work. The P38 engine ECU communicates with the BECM for security reasons. The D2 doesn't have a BECM.
Saying that though, I have seen a GEMS engine ECU in a car without a BECM & Labtronx has a 'bypass' so the GEMS (not too sure about Thor) ECU can work in a car without a BECM.

Did the D2's come out with the 4.6 as standard anywhere in the world?

The parts listing I use shows a 4.6 crank in the D2 engine section:

Sorry it's a bit on the small side.

And Wiki confirms it too for 03/04MY but doesn't say where. I assume the US would have it though.

    Question

I'm betting a NA 4.6 ECU wont play well in an AU spec car

Can you change the tune? NA would be high comp with o2 sensors.

The nanocom docs state that the market is set in the factory and cannot be changed so it may get a little weird in an AU vehicle

In fact I wouldn't mind a 98 ECU in mine but I am very reluctant to fit anything but an AU one
