    Lifted eas tailshaft vibrations.

So the lift kit is now all on. ..yay!
However, at anything more than 1.5" over stock offroad height I get a vibration from the front tailshaft. At 2 inches above stock I can feel the vibration at take off (which made me think that the uni joints were binding, but the yokes aren't touching), and above 70kph is undrivable.
I've got some new hardy-spicer ujs to put in, but the ones in the feel smooth and tight.
At stock offroad height is fine at 110.

I'm wondering if anyone has had these issues.

    Thanks.

You may have exceeded the max deviation from the optimum thrust angle for those UJs. They don't have to be binding to cause trouble. The UJs (Hooke joints) are not true CV joints. The only way around this is to install a drive shaft with double cardan joints. That's partly why in stock form the "high" setting in the EAS is restricted to 35 (55?) km/hr.

There's some good tech info on the Hardy Spicer (or other manufacturers) websites. A quick Google search on UJ vibration will yield "lotza" responses. Others will chip in on their experiences...but the general principles hold nevertheless.
    hope this helps...

Mine has the 2" Hard Range lift kit. Thankfully no noticeable vibration at any of the heights. With nothing special on my prop shafts to compensate for the additional angle.

I have a 2" lift which I've calibrated to be about 2" above each OEM height. So highway height ends up about 1" higher than what was standard. No vibration issues thus far, but I'll get around to putting the hardy spicers on, or perhaps a double carden, at least on the front (the shorter one).

Just to check. Are the hardys regarded as an upgraded UJ when compared to OEM?

Thanks guys. I'll replace the uj's and see if that makes a difference. It might be a case that as the uj's are now operating at a greater angle, that that isn't congruent with the wear patterns in uj bearings.

My secret fear was that the lift exceeded the maximum deviation and these vibs were just going to be inherant, but maybe that doesn't seem to be the case- however the speeds above 55kph don't help.

I did the uni at the transfer case end in mine about 6 months after I lifted mine. No dramas since (has been lifted for over a year now - wow)! My replacement was a HD hardy spicer (1300 series from memory). No vibrations in any height at any speed, although I normally get around in low anyway.

    Regular greasing helps too!

    Cheers

There was a warning in the old Hard Range lift kit installation guide that said you might experience prop shaft vibration, although the experience varied from car to car.

My Hard Rangie with 2" lift would get a vibration sometimes if I locked it in standard or high mode and drove at highway speeds, usually noticeable under de-acceleration. Other folks didn't get it all.

Agree that a double cardan is the way to fix it permanently, and is what I plan to do on the next incarnation of the Hard Rangie.

    Cheers, Paul.

Hi Guys I also have Hard Range 2" kit in mine for several years now!
No noticable vibrations until recently when I needed to change UJ's so I did front & rears. Having said this my heights are re calibrated to be effectively lower than std heights in each setting - somewhat compensating for 2" lift.
This is to allow me to fit 33" BFG muddies and not be too high on road with offroad setting higher than std, if that makes sense.

Thanks for that Kiethy, Paul and Phantom! When I get the time in mid December (don't laugh it's true!) I'll change the uni. joints.

The vibration is most noticable on overrun.
