    Hard gear changes

Gears change rather smoothly in normal mode. However when I transfer to 4wd gear changes are hard and clunk. Is there a way I can fix this?

Yes in low range, gear changes are hard and loud. My beast is a 1995 4.6 Gems.

I have a 96 model and have never noticed that, i'll check it next time I am in low range

I did however find in RAVE that adjustment of the throttle cable is critical to the correct operation of the gearbox, so it may be worth looking at that

I can't comment on 38A but in a Classic this is quite common and normal due to the extra leverage of the engine in low ratio. I feel it would be the same in a 38A. The 1/2 and 2/3 particularly as they are lower than 1 in high ratio.

In many different makes auto low ratios are higher than manuals because of this .

Thanks for the tips gents. I will have a play. Sounds like hard gear changes are common in low range.

Maybe you should bring it along to winter wombat if you can & jump in another P38 to compare but never felt such difference in mine.

It's on the trip planning section.
The Wombat s.f is just outside of Ballan, I'm going to try and make the effort to get down there on the Saturday. ... to cold to camp with the little one.

    resurrection of the decade

    Hi Fantom p38

I am new to the forum and I have a question regarding gear changes

I just test drove a p38 however I noticed exactly the same issue you had in your post from 2016.
    Hard gear changes

Like in your post, the car does not clunk in high range, changes gear are smooth and all speeds.

However in low range the gear changes clunk. Is it true as mentioned in the responses that this is normal? Or is this an issue, and if so did you resolve yours?

    Regards
    Phil
