Thread: P38 fuel pump

Depends on which model P38 you're talking about. '94 to '98 is GEMS injection and can use a VN to VR pump inside your original pump housing with some possible wiring plug changes. '99 on is THOR injection and uses a different pump. In any case you won't find a genuine LR one for sale, the vehicles are way too old now, only aftermarket is available. A VDO brand pump seems to be the most recommended replacement brand.

I fitted a VDO pump into the TD5 Disco, seemed ok.
I don't mind changing internals if needed, I just need to know things will fit when the old pump fails.

i purchased a VDO (not cheap) as replacement and will install it this week as the original is done well over 300k now, i will look at the one I'm pulling out and keep a spare, i guess some Walbro or Bosch would fit but can't tell yet

mine blew a fuse once so I think it's about time to replace it

Mine occasionally makes unusual noises on cold mornings, that's what started me thinking about a spare.
But I don't think it's a quick replacement, the tank has to come out apparently.
I wonder if it has anti siphoning trickery like the D2 had.
Looks like it has to be a VDO.

Not sure if the P38 ones are the same but they also have the Commodore versions.

I guess you pay your money and take your chances but for the price it was worth a chance - seems the same as the OEM one but I have not as yet fitted it - OEM are very expensive.
