    Rear diff assembly replacement

Hi all, the rear diff on 2001 HSE is making some noises, possibly bearings on the way out.
It has also has a crack in the housing that keeps leaking despite several attempts to fix.
I got a price on reconditioning the diff and it was roughly $880, I can get a good second hand entire assembly for about half that.
I'm considering replacing the entire rear diff assembly with a good second hand one.
    Has anyone done this?
    Was it hard to do?
Just weighing up the options at the moment, any advice will be most appreciated!
    Thanks, Pete.

I agree with your decision - I would replace it with a good second hand unit as well. Keep any good bits and scrap metal for the rest.

Thanks Keithy, good to have another opinion!
The rear hubs alone are about $900 new each, so at least I'll have some spare bits if ever needed.
I've had a look a the procedure in rave, looks like it's not too hard to do, but I'm expecting heavy work moving them around.
I should probably do the trailing arm bushes while I'm in there, not sure how hard they are to do.

Rear diff assembly replacement Your Message

Hi Peter, I also have to replace my rear diff, not because it is faulty but because I have a diff assemble with a Maxie Drive locker fitted to it. I have been putting it off but I will get to it soon. If I were in your position I would go for a good second hand one. And keep what you think might be useful out of the old one.
    Regards, Alan

The job itself is relatively simple - if you’ve ever removed an axle before to replace a leaking seal, then the only extra to add is remove the driveshaft, remove the diff nuts, pull it out!

Putting it all back together involves much of the same, with the exception of a nice clean diff centre, and gasket goo.

    Cheers

Thanks Keithy, I'm replacing the entire rear axle assembly, not just the diff centre.
I went and picked up the new (second hand) one this arvo, they are so heavy to move!
I'll have to take it apart anyway to change the brake rotors/calipers etc over and clean out the diff centre, reseal as it has a slight leak from the seal.
Once it's all apart I should be able to move it around ok on my own.
I'll reassemble it once it's on the vehicle, including new axle seals.
