interesting......
the other day I replaced the instrument dash on my P38, the replacement unit had 198,000km on the clock, mine had 280,000km, so when it was all installed, the Odometer Error reading came up. I drove it for that day, all the while the error message would come up on start up and shut down.
The next day, it was showing 280,000km, so the CPU must also store the odometer reading and 'reset' the replacement dash to the correct milage, just thought that is an interesting thing, obviously this is to make 'cheating' difficult, unless of course one has the full diagnostic system with which I believe the odometer can be fully reset.

This sounds the same as a discovery 2, the if either the becm or speedo are swapped, it takes the higher reading of the 2.
