I've been trolling through a number of forums too decide what too do, 2 of my my stock door speakers (3 1/2" speakers) are buggered. I've tried several places too buy them but no good. So then I thought I'll replace all 4 speakers with 4" aftermarket. Then I read that you shouldn't do that because the speakers are matched to the amp etc.
So any advice on this? I love the sound from the standard Head unit and speakers, will I get a better sound with some good quality aftermarket speakers? If so can anyone reccomend a brand/model?
When people say that speakers have to be matched to head units they are mostly refering to the impedance of the speakers. If you can get a meter on your old ones and match impedance with some new ones I am sure you will get a vast improvement without much trouble. The second reason they "match" speakers to head units is for power or wattage but I am sure most aftermarket speakers of any decent quallity will out power your OEM ones and therefore this is not as big an issue as the impedance matching. If in doubt go large wattage! (You can allways upgrade you headunit or amp at a later stage!
I hope this helps.
Cheers,
As said by JohnR, most car speakers will be 8 ohm I believe.
I went through same recently and had a listen to most makes.
Pioneer, Alpine, Rockford and Focal.
The guy at the shop said focal are the ants pants and they make a size for my Disco.
I also really wanted integrated bluetooth and the put new headunit and 4 speakers plus 2 little tweeters in the A pillar.
That set up had external crossover in the footwell and it just sounds great.
highly recommended and cost around $1200 installed.
Later I will get sub by the for under the seat.
I did some research on focal speakers and they really are good so I wasn't just sucked in.
Hope it helps.
