Looks like your bike is running some XT group components - the cluster will be a shimano piece, probably LX...now, these names don't matter, but what it does mean is that you have a cross country set up in terms of gearing.....designed to ride steep and/or technical terrain, so the gearing is designed to be optimal in such conditions.
Your old bike may have been more a compromise between commuting and mild "off road" rather than genuinely a pure XC flavour.
If this is an issue, it's no biggy to swap the cluster (also called a cassette or block) over to one with different ratios. You could alternatively use a road bike chainring. In fact, as it is virtually new, the shop may do so for free - a decent bike shop would.
But I suggest you ditch the thongs, get some cleats on your new sandals, and come with me to Mt Joyce and ride the bike where it was intended to go...I'm a beginner too, and I love the place! You'll likely then see the old bike as having too big a gearing rather than the other way around.
