Got my heart rate monitor - 186bpm, am I going to die?

I tried out my heart rate monitor for the ride home this afternoon. I set it up this morning, entering my birth date so it could do it's thing for the trip home.

I learnt that the % reading of my maximum heart rate does not go past 99%. For about 1/4 of the trip home, I had the thing beepng it's head off at me.

The highest I saw was 186bpm, and that was slowing down where the cycleway crosses a road. Get home & 186 was the highest recorded, with an average of 148. Most of the time I was looking at it, it was anywhere between 150-175.

Does this mean I'm fit or about to cark it?

I have good blood pressure, on the lower side of normal according to the doc, does that make a difference?

You know, I've always liked your 1000000th edition Scotty

It would be garaged and polished regularly

Imagine what it would be if you drove a Defender in Sydney traffic with a Kamper trailer attached. I think that put my BP through the roof.

I can feel my heart rate and find that there is a threshold that I can maintain - so thats what I exercise at. Im not sure what the bpm is at that threshold. If I go a little over it then I have to keep stopping and it's not as quick.

The thing is that I wasn't even going hard this arvo. It was quite warm so I took it relatively easy, averaged 25kph for the 22k trip & was home in 55min. I'm hardly ever puffed out or tired when I get to work/home either..

Still quick compared to my toe clip times though but 5min slower than Monday's trip.

This morning's trip to work took 50min & I reached 57.6kph on the Hwy at one point. I'm glad I wasn't wired up then .

I guess I should add that I'm nearly 44 years old.

The short answer is - yes.

The long answer is - I will be surprised if you last more than about another 60 or 70 years.

Jesus you lot. In this PC world you cant tell people that they're going to kick the bucket and get turned into worm food. Its not healthy for thier confidence, self-esteem and it can lead to a wide range of societal problems.

Scott, you wont die.... you'll merely ride into the velodrome in the sky.

To work out the max heart rate is take the max for most which is 220bpm and minus your age which I guess is 44 in this case.
So your theoratical max is 220-44=176.
That is aguide only of course.

Fitness is not the speed at which you can do any given task in this case riding but the ability to recover from any given task.
So the more you ride and the fitter u get, your recovery rate will improve.

    Have a good ride
