The other bitsa had 34701187A. Does this have any significance apart from me now knowing what to look for?
the backwards 6 thing is a "G". info from the CalVIN web site is as follows:

    Model: Land Rover, Series IIA
    Body type: Basic
    Wheel base: 109in
    Engine: diesel
    Model years: 1962-1971
Destination: Completely knocked down (CKD), right-hand drive (RHD)
    00373 Serial number
G Design: Six significant design modifications
Suffix used from April 1969 till October 1971

The G on the pic that Mrs hh attatched doesn'took like the thing that is after the number. It is smaller than the number by about a third of the size, but it had similar spacing as with the other numbers that were stamped.

I have done some digging through various Landrover info sites and have found a reference to the little reversed 6... seems it is an 'a'.

    Series 2 chassis numbers

The above link has the series number with an 'a' at the end. But the rest of the info Pop058 supplied hits the nail on the head...unfortunately, the diesel is no more and a 186 sits in it's place. OH well... at least I have a Landy.

    Nice buy.

I see the ute is a different colour inside than out.
What clur are you planning for it, ultimately.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

I was thinking of Olive Drab. Keep it green and relatively easy to paint everything. Black chassis and under carrige. I wanted to go Mil Spec colouring...but the wife said she won't be seen dead in a camo painted ute...
....but I can get away with the green, as the wife likes that colour. To keep my Landy a healthy project, I know I have to keep the wonderful wife on my team. A slight colour change is no biggy.

I did want to track down a Tdi motor and swap that later and try to find a pto winch setup. The ute has no real historical significance, so I don't feel guilty about detouring away from the traditional rebuild.

Hey everybody... I have emptied the 3/4 roller and Have begun in earnest the sorting process. There were surprises... It now looks like there is enough spare panels to mostly reconstruct a cab. I have floor panels, trans tunnel covers....oh and by the way. if anyone is interested in any dirt cheap parts from the 3/4 roller, feel free to contact me. I have it parked up at a workshop now and after a clean out and a closer inspection, the chassis is delaminating around the rear diff arches and the rear most cross member (rear bumper) is a beat up a bit, but the the tray and canopy are in pretty good nick. All glass is available however the weather seals are shot. There is a complete front end (diff, springs and steering linkages) and a rear diff minus the long axel. the wheel end and parts are turning up as I sift through the other boxes of parts. I've also come across two complete clutch and flywheel sets.

More parts and updates to come.

Well... I am back again after some time spent working on the Landy. I have finally got it back to my place after finding out that I couldn't work on it any more at the workshop of a friend. So after I got it home, I got to work at getting the old 186 out. I did find some paint I had handy for a little more 'unified colour'.

The bonnet is all I have painted so far and the rest will get done when I get some more paint. I have begun to give things a coat of body deadener after and intense afternoon with descaling and degreasing products.

After blowing away half of the accumulated Australian country side from underneath, I was happy to see that the chassis is in good condition all in all. The rear bumper needs attention with a grinder, some steel and a mig...as does the front ends of the chassis rails where the bumper attaches.

Wonder if you can register it with REMLR -after all, it's clearly marked as a Combat vehicle.

It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".
