    Mega Squirt 3 X - Experts?

    Hi,

I have a Megasquirt 3X and am having trouble setting it up and setting up the simulator - all instructions associated with the MS3X are horrid and assume a level of knowledge of the system that I do not have.

So is there anyone on here who has setup up MS3X, the JimStim and JimstimX that would be happy to share their experiences with me.

I am at the stage of wanting to cut my losses on this system for my RV8 and go to some sort of American (Holly) self learning system on but in a dizzy cam and timing cover and go back to a dissy rather then coil packs.

    Thanks

Don't give up on it Garry, I haven't used 3X but used 2 on my 4.6 and it was great and easy to tune. I just used Tuner Studio to dial mine in but yours sounds different. Give Stirling on here a PM as he looks to have done a lot of development on his disco ute project but I can't remember what version his was. LR4X4 has a good sub forum on Megasquirt too and the guys there seem willing to help

    Hi Garry,
Happy to help. Are you planning to come in to Sydney any time soon? It's probably best to work in person to help you out, other than that a skype call may be the next best thing.

Did you assemble the board yourself or order it pre buit?

    Thanks,
    Stirling

    Thanks Nick and thanks Stirling.

Yes I built the ECU myself as well as the Simulators - JimStim and JimStimX.

The tests in the build stage all proved Ok though I mucked up the ECU motherboard on one spot (due to the poor instructions - soldered in something not needed and mucked things up trying to remove the component). It is in an area that is not needed as the function is covered by the MS3X board and conductivity seems to be OK.

I think I have all the jumps in the ECU all OK but having trouble with the jumps etc on the simulator as the instructions are not real good as they assume a level of MS3 knowledge I do not have. I know I have to adjust the dashpots on the ECU mainboard and the MS3X board but I have not come across the instructions on this as yet.

So I am at the point of trying to setup basic sensor parameters into the ECU via the Simulator but I am not sure of some of the connections. Of course I do not know if every joint is spot on in the ECU (I did check each joint after soldering) and whether I have selected the right options for including components during the build stage. It didn't get overly hot or smoke so I must have done something right.

The ECU does talk to TunerStudio and have TPS, CLT, O2 control but not Tach at this stage.

My main frustration is the poor documentation and how it is scattered all over the place.

So what I am trying to achieve is a 4.6 Thor - so will have the following sensors.

Wide Band O2 - one sensor
Batch ignition with EDIS 8 (I want to initially run an old LPG system on it so the EDIS will provide ignition if all else fails - later I will switch to injected LPG and do away with the EDIS 8. At the start the fuel pump will not be controlled by the MS3X.
    Sequential injection
    PWM Idle
    Knock sensors
    TPS sensor
    MAP sensor
    Intake air temp
    Coolant temp
    Cam sensor
36-1 Trigger wheel with VR sensor.

So just right now I would like to get the simulator to work as it should so I can get basic sensor parameters into the the ECU program so that the engine should at least start so that the real sensors can take over and the program be tuned to suit.

So that is the background of where I am at. The engine is in, the engine harness is not yet complete but not far off. The engine will run on gas with EDIS running in default mode.

Any advice would be appreciated. OH - yes I can get to Sydney and bring the ECU and Stim etc.

    Cheers

    Garry

    Hi Garry,
The setup you are going for is nearly exactly the same as the setup I used except for the knock sensors.

For the crank sensor, instead of trying to get it to work with the simulator board, perhaps it would be best to try to run the board with the actual VR sensor and spinning a metal plate across the sensor while the trigger logger runs in TunerStudio? You can then try adjusting the trim pots to see if it starts picking up the signal.

Anyway send me a PM with your email address and I can share my wiring diagram with you for some inspiration.
