A couple of tips on your looms.
The English models (and possibly) some Aussie models had a heater on the carby. This is the thick wire an the far end of the alternator loom that doesn't connect to the black three way. There was also a cold start switch wire (green with yellow stripe?). This was on the intake side of the head at the front. It wont have a thermostat wire although you can use this switch wire if you don't have the switch and id the other end correctly. The carb heater had a switch on the dash to operate and this is what the rubber booted ring terminals are for (not a starter solenoid I first thought!!).
Also, because you are using an alternator you wont be able to connect your ammeter anymore. Firstly because the loom wont let you and secondly it wouldn't be able to cope with the amps anyway. Can only use the charge light from now on!
I found I had to lay it all out on the floor and work through it methodically with the wiring diagram and a multimeter. Some is very obvious, some is not.
Take your time and sooner or later you will get that very satisfying Eureka moment.:):)
