So gone off the Gal idea, after being talked out of it, old boy and a mate who works boats are both right in saying, what happens when you forget to weld on a bracket, or have to do a repair?

So enamel or 2pac machinery grey I think

Grind back gal, weld, paint with cold gal.

I am sure you wouldn't regret it. Gal will still protect bare metal patches up to 5mm diam. in salt water.

It's the inside of the chassis that's always a concern for me ... When you weld or drill, you can easily paint the outside to protect, but how do you recoat the burnt paint / galv inside the chassis

I've always toyed with the idea of plugging up all the holes of the rails and pressure filling it up with Red Oxide paint ... Or ... liquid Tar ... till absolutely over flowing (Full) and then letting it drain out .... If you get my drift

    BTW .... Looking good Matt

Since gal is a sacrificial coating, it corrodes in preference to the steel. As I mentioned above, studies have been done on zinc plated steel sheet where the zinc has been removed in circular sections of incresing size, and the panel then sprayed repeatedly with salt water. Sections of bare steel 5mm diam and smaller didn't even develop surface rust!!!

Ideally, youwould spray some cole gal on the inside of the chassis where the weld was with a degreasing gun or similar. But in reality, unless you used silly amounts of heat when welding I doubt that any internal rust would develop, as enough zinc should be left behind (or sufficiently close nearby).

Forgot to say - great work Matt!

Yea, but I've welded plenty of gal before and no matter how much you grind off its never pleasant

Not to worry, got 4L of machinery grey now and will be filling the rails with rust proof wax, so should stay relatively rust free

Got lots of shiny bits, new grill surrounds, lights, ind, Madman EMS, diff cover, steering box, ordered disc handbrake, just chasing flares now, arms, panhard, 2 new fuel tanks on order, all bushes....heaps more, gonna be a 15k minimum rebuild I think
