I am a heavy diesel mechanic
I know there were a stack of people following the build up, but has anyone heard from Mike on his travels?
Does anyone talk to Mike or know his buddy that did the window guards?
I guy I am talking with, here in the USA, said that if i can get the DXF files for the screens he would fab a set up for me.
Any help would be great!
Hi,
Just read through this thread...bloody good reading and helps in developing ideas for my defender.
Does anyone know how Mike got on with his travels home?
Would be good to let him know that his build is still being read and enjoyed!

33,202 views - never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that so many people would be interested in something I did :)
But the big question remains, whatever became of Mike, and "Does anyone know how Mike got on with his travels home?"
The response has been a long time coming, and my sincerest apologies for that. The short answer is, no, not yet.
My defender and I spent a year travelling around Australia, visiting some amazing places and meeting some extraordinary people along the way. For the most part it ran excellently, and rarely gave me any trouble. Unfortunately, three days before shipping to South America, the email that nobody ever wants to receive came through - a close family member had just been diagnosed with lung cancer, and the prognosis was not good. I'd like to say that I didn't have to think twice about it, truth be told it was one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make, but ultimately I did the only thing I could do, and that was to make a lot of phone calls, park up my truck in a very accomodating friend's shed, and fly home.
As you might imagine, it's been a long and hard year, but I still want to make this trip, and because of that, as of two weeks ago, I'm back in Australia - South Australia to be precise - slowly piecing things back together and getting my truck on the road again. There's the usual things to fix in a vehicle that's been left standing for over a year with no time for preparation, and not helped by rodents, and the little thieving bastards who took a screwdriver to my rear door lock and helped themselves to much of the contents one night. But such is life, and the same friend who put up with having my truck cluttering up his shed for a year, has offered me his parent's workshed which is what I'm using now. So fingers crossed, Ill be back on th eroad again soon. o
My plans haven't changed, except in one aspect. Seeing as I'm doing this trip one way or the other, I've decided to use it to raise money for charity. The charities of my choice are of course, the cancer society (have just had a second relative diagnosed, waiting on tests as we speak), and Cystic Fibrosis Ireland (lost a sister to this). It's early days yet, but I've been in touch with both organisations back in Ireland, and they have expressed a lot of interest.
My apologies for leaving a lot of people in the dark this past while - real life took over with the exception of everything else. To be honest, this has been a difficult post to write - in a lot of ways I feel like I built up this big hype to an event I never followed through on, and disappointed people in the process. Foolish thoughts I know, but thoughts nonethless. However, I do feel that it's necessary to extend my sincerest thanks to the people of this forum who helped me out throughout the build, to let them know that I'm alive and well, and that the journey is still going ahead, I just had to shift the start date a bit :) If people have no objections, I'd like to continue to post to this thread, as I'm going to have quite a bit of work to do still, before I head off.
Sincerely,
~Mike
Hi Mike - David from Balhannah here! I met you on my motorbike many months ago when you were building things into your Landie.
Good to hear you are alive and well, although it sounds like you've had a tough year.
Hope you get a better run at your travel plans this time around.
Cheers
David
Talk about mixed emotions...
So glad to see you made it back here, but so sorry to read of the times you have been having of late.
As always, the offer of a hot coffee, or a cold beer always stands.
Onya Mike! Nice to hear you hadn't dropped of the edge of the earth. Hope things go a little easier for you from here on.
Continue on ... Looking forward to it ....
