Hey Phil,
yeah, after some further reading I did find that the MAXXIS tyres seem to wear out quicker than most, so I won't be going with these. Will certainly look into the ELDORADO's today.
Has anyone used Michellin LTX A/T's??
I got MAXXIS 751 on my 130 and find they wear faster than i like them to, i have had ELDORADO tyres before and loved them, a bit more expensive than MAXXIS but they were the best tyres i ever had, american made by a company called Jepson, top quality, I had the mud terrain and they handled wear on the road and off the road really well, 4wd action had a report on them and they said they performed well, I agree they do perform well, next tyres i get will be definitely ELDORADOS.

Dunlop road grippers in 750x16, you will get them as take offs as they come on the land cruisers and the buyers want fat tyres so get them changed. Any tyre place near a toymotor dealer will have them. Not the best tyre but prtty tough, did a Kimberly trip/ gibb river road and not one puncture.
and 750X16 should be available anywhere in the world.
I have Michelin LTX A/T's on my work car (Ford Ranger) and they have done 70,000km so far and still look good for another few thousand more.
I don't know prices though as they came with the car and I haven't had to fit new ones.
I recently bought Cooper ST's for my 130 and so far they have been great. Although you do notice a bit more road noise and at $330 each they are not cheap.
My recommendation is:
Michelin XZL 7.50 R16
Great tyre off and on road - I get 80'000kms out of them at least.
Have driven them on 'roads' you will be driving on during your trip and never had a puncture.
In regards to the XZY's:
Both the XZY and XZL have been tested and are used by the UN. Although as you correctly stated, XZY are no longer manufactured.
Cheers,
Daniel

Yeah - I agree with Mulgo.
Got XZL's on my 130 and they are good apart from wet bitumen, where you have to allow a bit extra for braking.
They are noisier than General Grabbers (as you'd expect) but not terrible, unlike Goodyear MTRs which whine like hell as they wear down.
Cheers
David
Guys, thank you for the tyre suggestions - I think I'll be looking at a set of XZL's in the near future.
Despite the lack of updates, progress has been going very well. It's far from finished, but I'm currently on an impromptu road trip from Adelaide to Tasmania, along the Great Ocean Road, popping into Melbourne on the way. I'm using the nights to catch up on typing up the progress I've made, and will be posting wherever I can get free wifi. A couple of people have already asked me if they can take a look at the truck (for what reasons I'm not sure), if anyone want's to take a look if I'm passing through the area, then let me know
