In those pre-computer days, how did they work out the load sharing between loco's. Would be hard if you have two different types of loco's double heading. Maybe they both just pulled like buggery!!!

As you suggest , when double heading you just drove to the track using track knowledge and give it **** where required , got jerked around a bit when the crew got out of sync sometimes , but when you were in the lead it felt like you were doing all the work !! , bit like being the last guy on a tug o war rope .

Talking about carriages,a little of topic i know, but this morning i was down near the Townsville train station as the Queenslander was pulling in and i was shocked at the condition of the carriages. They look run down and very old with a LOT of dinner plate sized rust bubbles that were blistering the paint.

The important parts are probably well maintained but what you see on the outside is a disgrace. Its a shame to see them in this condition

Yeah, the clips always bring back memories of when I was a young bloke watching them in awe as they passed through Teralba and under the Cockle Creek bridge. When we saw them we always stopped our car and got out to watch them. Nothing comes close nowadays, even the class 90 (impressive as they are) but about 15 (maybe 20) years ago the class 48's double heading up through Cardiff with the two engines diesel motors resonating as they passed under the Cardiff bridge and past the station is probably a distant second place.
