    6029 Restoration

    For those who may not know there is a project to restore a Garrett in Canberra at the moment. There is a site here Project 6029 that details the progress being made.

    In the meantime have a look at this

    Would be interesting to see one of these loco's in working order again. The cost of restoration would be horrendous, I would imagine!!

    p.s. back again, just had a look at the 6029 site link and the figure of $70k needed is a lot lower than I would have imagined. Volunteers do help to keep costs down.

    Big Beyer Garratt 6029 restored at last

    Was excited to see on ABC News tonight that "The biggest steam locomotive in the Southern Hemisphere" has been restored by enthusiasts in Canberra and had its first outing under its own steam this weekend.

    Massive restored steam train completes first test run in Canberra - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

    Can't wait to have a ride behind that beautiful beast!

    Here's a technical question for you lot,
    as its a 484+484, does the fact the drives are under a "diminishing load" make traction a problem?

    A Total of 400K has been raised so far without Govt assistance. A pretty good effort I reckon

    Hi Pedro and it is actually the reverse.

    Garrets have a high tractive effort to weight ratio than other forms of articulated type locomotives
