Yep unspool. The end of the rope will most likely be attached to drum by a battery cable lug on the rope and a very short screw. If doing long winches a lot pays to carry a spare of both.
Is it there as a thermal barrier for the rope against the drum?
Or as an abrasion protector for the rope.?

. The 5m sleaves slip a little which is either great or poor. I think the ablity to move the sleave up near the hook might be great as when I winch over a rocky outcrop I will be able to move the sleave to that point helping protect the rope. I have whipped the top sleave up near the hook using braided fishing line. Whipping is not a bondage trick
