    No postage got expensive.
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

I was lucky enough to pick up an as-new T516 on Gumtree the other week. The seller didn't know what it was - $120. The only think missing were the spare shear pins in the yellow handle. Finding replacements in Australia has proved impossible. Ordered some from Tractel in the UK. Not cheap.

I picked up a fairly good tifor off a member here who moved to Melbourne (?) from Perth earlier this year. Unfortunately I forgot to grab the handle before he left! Gotta get me one eventually.

Just been through sourcing a new handle. Honey Brothers in the UK will send but about £20 for postage on top of the handle. Bullivants in Sydney sorted me for cable, I forgot to ask them about a handle

    Nobles may be an option.

Regarding missing handles. Go to a steel supply with the tirfor. Get some tube/pipe that fits the levers, then a another that telescopes inside. A bike handle bar grip from the hardware and a split pin on a tether to go through the hole you drill to keep the handle extended. Probably cost less than $20.00

    Don,

This may not work unfortunately if you just use standard tubing.

I don't have Tirfor, but a similar design of hand winch (1.6T capacity).
The handle on this is of similar design with one tube sliding in the other, and I'm positive it must be made of high tensile steel since I can put a huge amount of force on the handle and it never bends.

Not sure how you'd go finding HT steel tubing at your local steel supply place however.

    HT substitute

If you can't get HT tube use steam pipe with a thicker wall.
