    1956 86 resto

Well time is nearly here to start resto number 2. The old boy is in really good condition except for the chassis. While I have very little rust, I would like to take the chassis back to near metal and paint it to ensure that it's protected.
As the paint work has been touched-up somewhere between 'recently and earlier', I am not sure if the chassis was painted black or green. Pictures of other S1's are a little hard to tell what was original. Can anyone help with the correct factory colour.
p.s. still looking for one L518 lens and one matching alum. ring for the brake light.

    Cheers.

My '56 CKD has a green chassis with yellow primer showing through, I also have a '55 chassis that is green.

There was a point where production in the UK switched from green to black for the chassis colour but was this followed for CKD in Australia ?
Considering that the chassis' were welded up here (crossmembers to side rails) the painting would have been done locally so could the colour have even varied from State to State ?

    colour

For what it is worth, all the 55 onwards that I have seen are black, yes sometimes they look like very faded green- yellow but that is the primer.
Up to 55 have all been body colour except the 48s and most 49s that have been silver.

    My '56 chassis is green.

The rear crossmember is yellow (primer) surface rust and a couple of patches of green. On the crossmember below you'll see green worn down to yellow primer on the edges & high points.

It could have been re-chassied in the past but the numbers match up.

My 55's chassis was green but needed work so I blasted it, fixed it and repainted black because I didn't want to end up with a different green to the body.

same and i like the black chassis because it looks better and contrasts with the body

    Thanks gents,
I got under and lightly scrubbed some of the chassis and under the 56 years of dust and dirt was green, almost exactly as pictured by Gromit. I think that I will contrast with a black finish as the patina rich body has been painted the wrong green at some stage and I don't fancy a complete re-spray.

Still looking for a L518 pork pie lens and ring ??????!!!!!! anyone got a left over?

    Thanks for all the input.
    Phillip
