    diff backlash

I am starting to get stuck into my rebuild of an 86" with a series 2 2.25 engine.

It was bought as a basket case.

The diffs both have a lot of play - backlash. I can't seem to find much in the WSM (usefully says to pop them off to Rovers for a rebuild!).

    How much is OK?

What is involved in tightening them up?

Most of the backlash is probably from end play in the differential gears. This is very unlikely to give any problems. However, if there is any side or end play in the pinion or carrier bearings, then attention is needed. Pulling the diff out of the axle housing and checking the play is be pretty simple.

You can't have a Rover manual then, because the procedure is very detailed in the genuine workshop manual. Available from most online Land Rover parts dealers,

Series III manuals are available online, rebuilding a Rover diff is covered in detail.

Just search 'Land Rover series 3 manual download free'.
