I'm sure that after a certain year the indicators will have to be self cancelling but that won't apply to your 86".
My Series I has an 'aftermarket' stalk added and it's not self cancelling. I have a Series II that has a toggle switch fitted when indicators were added, as long as there is a warning lamp this should also be OK.
There were a lot of aftermarket stalks available if your not sure about the one you've found online visit the next swapmeet in your area and you should be able to find something.

As above, they don't need to cancel as long as you have a warning light visible to the driver.

Check out Holdens in the UK. They have a fair bit of Lucas parts that might suit the period:

My brother fitted blinkers operated by a toggle switch on the dash to his Series 2 in 1963. Shortly after this he was pulled up by a cop who pointed out to him that he had them wired diagonally!

Driving a Series L/R with a non-self-cancelling indicator stalk switch is no problem at all, as long as you mount the switch on the left of the steering column.That way you won't have to take your right hand off the steering wheel while you make a turn ,change gears and operate the indicator switch.. I believe a company called "Merit Malta" in Malta (where else) still produces these switches. .W.

Hella make exactly the right sort of dashboard direction indicator switch with built in light on the toggle of the switch.

New steering columb non cancelling switches are advailible for plant equiptment ( I sell them for forklifts for 30 dollars plus GST)
Ashdown ingrams via a local auto electrical shop should be able to help you.
If I remember correctly the early series 2A self cancelling switch worked OK which had a little rubber wheel running on the bottom of the steering wheel hub.

Be good to know how the indicators would look on the 86 as I am approaching the same delema. I saw on a UK site restored stalks. Morris Minor front indicator lights have lower parkers and indicators at the top of the lense and might suit the front of the wings without doubling up on lights. I was going to investigate putting indicators into the lower section of a D-lamp so as not to drill new holes or have extra lights.

My 86" had been fitted with indicators long before I got hold of it. There are some pictures in this thread. 1956 Series 1 with PTO welder (home made)

If the wings & tub were untouched I wouldn't be cutting holes in them today.
I ran an Austin Somerset in the UK years ago and it only had trafficators fitted. After a few near misses I made up brackets and mounted indicators off the bumper bolts so as not to cut holes in the bodywork.
