Thread: Semi-Floating axle "Distance washer"

I pulled one apart a year ago so the first pic shows the end of the half shaft, note the tapered bit in the middle this is what the washer looking thing in pic 2 is for, it is tapered and makes the end of the half shaft flat so that the bearing sits flush against it.

if im interpreting it correctly (based on older ford and holden axle setups

it also positions and preloads the bearing.

later axles have this machined in place and use a selectable shim in the axle tube side of the bearing race intead.

Cheers guys. I bought the bearings today and they came with "collars" which look like the washer pictured...
I'll see how it goes.

I purchased the same bearings and those collars are still in the shed.

Northern Lander summed it up (I think). The shaft has a radius on it so a collar is needed with a chamfer inside to fit over the radius giving a flat surface for the bearing to press against.
A radius is used on the shaft rather than a sharp edge which would be a stress raiser.

Your axles should already have the collars pressed in place. Hang on, in Northern Landers second picture the 'washer' on the RHS is the offending item.
A picture of your axle would help.

Thanks and sorry for the delayed reply.
I have attached a pic. As you say there is a radius, but there was certainly no separate washer when dismantled.
Is this an example of the machined type? (I know it looks like there is a division line, but it is one piece)
