    S1 Swivel pin housings vs SII & SIII

    Just wanting some clarification: can I put SII, or SIII (Non v8) swivel pin housings onto a 1958 SI 88 axel?

    I'm told they are very similar, but I'd also like to keep the cone configuration at this point!

    My current housings are worn, and it seems un-economical to repair them!

    Any suggestions, or offers of some hidden NOS in you sheds would be appreciated!!!

    Do you mean the swivel-pin housing, or the swivel-pin-bearing housing, commonly called the swivel-ball?

    The S.P. housings will be different due to the stud sizes where the swivel pins clamp in place, which would mean changing the steering arms as well.

    The swivel-ball is interchangeable with later models; however; I have found that the chrome-plating quality is atrocious! Rust damage on them can be repaired by soft-soldering, or using an epoxy filler,

    The chrome balls apart from the SIII-Stage 1 as you mention are functionally interchangeable*. The later SIII ones (which are actually the SIIB forward control) are stronger than the S1 version although there are some cosmetic differences.

    As Charlie mentions, if you are talking about the cast iron housing that holds the stub axle and fits over the chrome ball, then there are some differences, mainly in that the size of the studs that hold in the steering levers and flanges (for the bearings or cones or railco bushes) are increased, meaning that you have to change the steering levers etc.

    * You shouldn't use an 80" chrome ball with with uni jointed halfshafts, there may be clearance issues.
