    Cotter Pins :( (pommy variety)

Had thought I'd seen the last of these mongrel tributes to British engineering after i got rid of my last pushie with cotter pin centre bracket. Now I find the $1clutch pedal and cross shaft are retained by the suckers.

As usual they don't let go!

I recall there used to be a way to shift them out of centre bracket but being over 40 years since I did do anything there, can't remember - ol'timers doesn't help.

    Anyone??????

    Cheers

    RF

On the lower tie bolts, still not done, my angle grinder isn't large enough dia. Waiting to see if I can borrow bigger one

On a pushbike we always used to undo the nut a little bit then hit it with a hammer.
Here is a method using a vice [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mybfNsm1XwM]simple cotter pin removal in 30 seconds especially for stubborn pins found on vintage raleigh bikes - YouTube[/ame]
Maybe a G-clamp and a socket small enough to sit over the cotter pin.

Yeah, same here, just backed the nut off and smacked them with a hammer.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

I backed mine off, smacked them with a hammer and buggered the threaded part forever!

Stage 2 was to drill a pilot hole into the pin; enlarge it as much as I dared and then drive the remains out, which worked; and then to make two new pins suitably coated in anti-seize.

Try heating the base of the pin with oxy-acetylene until dull red and tap the nut when it has just cooled to black; this may need several attempts to kill the rust inside,

    Cheers Charlie

Thanks guys. Done most most of that Even manged to get a ball joint separator onto them. Whereas I'd popped the steering tie rod ends with a bang, peesa; looked like I'd strip the threads or shear the bolt on the cotter pins.

Will have a go with the oxy and looks like a drill them out Oh well!

If it wasn't fun we wouldn't do it
