    Cannot find chassis number

    Hi guys,
I have a old 1954 86" series 1 with no trace of a Chassis number. I have searched high and low with no success. Ive been told it was stamped on the fire wall but unfortunately there was no trace of it there either. The only numbers i found were "8654" on the front LH spring hanger. Am i looking in the wrong spot?
    Cheers guys.

You might need a wire brush and a bit of spit.

Position of the number varied on Series 1 (and later) according to where it was built.

Places to look are on the LH rear spring hanger, RH front dumb iron, and either right or left engine mount brackets (on top), and quite possibly in other places. It is possible that the number you have found is an incomplete chassis number.

If the chassis is either rusty or has multiple layers of paint, the number is likely to be very hard to see, and may need wire brushing to bare metal, and possibly etching with acid. But, of course, before you can do this you have to find it.

Do you have any documentation with the number on it?

    Thanks for your answers guys,
I have had another search around the chassis today with a wire brush and still no sign of it. There are no other numbers near the "8654" on the LH front spring hanger.
I got the landy from a family friend who only drove it a few times leaving it in his paddock for 15 years and doesn't know much about it, Ill have to try contact the previous owner before him, see if he still has any details on it.

I assume it would be difficult to rego with no chassis number haha, someone recommended that i could steal the number off a wrecked landy? has anyone done this?
    Cheers.

Mine is stamped onto the top of the chassis rail on the LHS just in front of the engine mount. You would look down just behind the radiator panel. (1954 86").
