Tiny bit excited

Well after 3 years on and off, thousands of dollars later, a whole heap of time, energy and resources I am kinda done with this project. Only things remaining are wiring really (and bleeding the brakes) and then rego. This will most likely be my last post after some 51000 views, numerous comments and advice, a lot of frustrations, lots of wow moments when things have gone right or wrong, huge learning curve for me, at times very satisfying but ultimately time consuming. Took it out of the garage for the final pics and she don't look too bad to me. Final piece of the puzzle was the mudgaurd which as you can see is on. So thanks to all who supported me in this build. Another one saved. Just as a comparison to what i started with is a throw back photo of when the S1 was purchased in its raw state as found on the property. Thanks to all again.

Well done Joe, a great effort and perserverance on all accounts.
Once you get it registered you'll need to get it out on a trip with other Series enthusiasts and start enjoying the fruits of your labour.

For a limited time only happy to provide some more updates so... unsure about rego but will prob go club rego as its much cheaper. Have encountered two more problems which need doing (OMG) ...

1. starting bleeding the brakes and noticed the rear pass side was leaking brake fluid, thought i had not tightened the nipple up but ... out came the brake cylinder as it wasn't the nipple bleeding but from the cylinder which was brand new, hmmmm[bawl]

2. coolant has started weeping from the water pump - again was brand new so not sure why...

3. close up of the water pump, have tightened the bolts, now thinking may have to remove and buy new again perhaps...

4. rear pass side brake pulled apart to remove the brake cylinder - (feel like going backwards again), just when the bleeding was progressing quite well i thought damn leak

5. on a positive note fitted the door tops with just one nut in case i want to remove again - not sure which looks better with or without the door tops

6. finally the culprit - didn't realise the brake cylinder has this outer boot cover which i thought was a dust cover only but is the main seal to hold the brake fluid in, and i must of pinched this when fitting and caused the leak. went to local brake shop could get the rubber boot at $15 each but decided for $35 to just get another brake cylinder complete in case i have pinched another boot elsewhere. I did have a front cylinder new but the boot seems smaller on the 10inch brakes compared to my 11inch fronts, oh well now waiting on order to arrive and get some brakes working on the beast so at least i can take her for a spin.

Joe , that boot is only a dust boot , there should not be any fluid in it unless the seal inside the cylinder is damaged. When you were having all the trouble with the brakes earlier that cylinder didn't come apart & you damaged the cup putting it back together.

From what I can see with the water pump it may only be the gasket , it is hard to tell from the photo. Are you sure you cleaned all the old gasket off the matting surface of the block. unless you got a faulty pump.
I have door tops for mine , the only time I put them on is if it is extremely cold . Even when it dose rain it never comes in & i find it very noisy with them on.

2. pulled inner rubbers out and all seem ok to me

3. these are all the inner bits and are all ok though have ordered a new one so will replace with the new one and see how i go then...

4. time to move onto draining the radiator again....[bawl]

5. inner top radiator sock glad i bought one of these lots of rusted steel bits ....

6. quick wash down and ready to reuse. [biggrin]

next remove the radiator to get better access to water pump...[bigwhistle]

1. just as easy to pull radiator out and have better access to water pump then working in confined spaces, water pump in situ

3. gasket was extremely hard to come off but looked to be lacking in some places cause of the leak perhaps

4. was thinking of buying a new pump but this is new so thought to see if i had a gasket which i did so decided to keep this one

5. so applied gasket glue then the gasket itself then gasket glue again (in blue) then fitted up... [bigwhistle] lets see what happens now

6. front end almost completed and put back together again minus some bolts yet...

Off to SCA to buy some new coolant and then re test the pump and look out for leaks...[biggrin] busy day today

Why don't you take the cylinder & bits to a brake specialist & get them to have a look at them . You would be best to put new cups in the cylinder anyway , they should be able to supply what you need or tell you if there is something wring with the cylinder.

1. so my new replacement brake cylinder arrived and was promptly replaced, this is a 2nd all NEW part but have not as yet bleed the brakes, pretty sure this should solve my problem (may have gotten a poor new part before)

2. tyre re fitted and ready for the next stage of bleeding the brakes again and looking for leaks, fingers crossed no more leaks

3. removed the door tops, like the look of the door tops but still getting some exhaust fumes inside the cabin - haven't worked out where the fume is coming from so for now they are removed and stored in the back of the S1
