    May - 86" Series 1

    Hi All,

So over the weekend managed to rope in Homestar and we went on a road trip to Mildura to pick-up the new project.

Here she is - loaded up on Saturday afternoon:

All loaded up we had a lovely steak with Mick88 & Jill, and perhaps I had a few too many red, red wines...

The next day - all ready for the trip home.

The mighty Hilux towed the S1 like it wasn't even there.. We went out to the local weigh bridge just to double check the weight, and it was 1,940KG.. (Which was under the trailer rated weight so no issues).

Stopped for a rest stop on the way home - same rest stop that I met up with a bunch of AULRO folk for Melrose/Maralinga last year:

Steady progress and we got home by mid afternoon, and here she is all tucked up in bed:

    Cheers,
    GG.

    Bloody fantastic.

(the only thing I don't like is the way you have crossed over the binding strap like that )

    Very nice find

The only thing that stands out of place are those horrible but perhaps practical side mirrors. Looks to be a very straight looking S1, well done. Enjoy

    Some pics and some questions

    Hi All,

So I have had a bit of a chance to look at May - although the full investigation won't be finished until I have put it on a hoist & found the engine/chassis numbers...

I am new to the Series 1 game - so am very unfamiliar with these vehicles.. (I do have two Series 2's - but there are quite a number of differences). So I'm trying to identify / check the parts below...

On both front doors a leather strap has been used for the door stay:

I'm guessing this isn't the "normal" door strap - as the doors won't open to 90o - rather they only open up to about 60o.. No huge issue - I just need to replace the door strap, but I was just wondering - what's standard?

    The engine bay:

The vehicle came with 2 x spares, on a nifty arrangement:

Here - you can see that it has the original seat backs (I think), and the original crank handle. The Middle/Passenger seat bases are missing, but I have plans for that:

Here is the petrol tank - I filled it up today and so far no leaks:

The tool box was empty - apart from a screw driver, and a bottle jack (more of that later), and a fan belt that is well beyond it's used by date:

The vehicle plate - too far gone to read much:

There are some curios interior lights - I haven't experimented with them yet, but I believe that the wires are plugged into the dash positive/negative terminals:

The same lights are found in the tray:

The vehicle came with spare parts - some Land Rover, and I think some Bedford...

Am I correct in saying that this is a spare, rear axle/hub?

Am I correct in saying that these are fuel pumps?

A carby? But is it applicable to a Series 1?

    Some spare starter motors?

    A distributor?

A steering box & steering arm?

A fuse box? (I think that I have a spare one of these from my Series 2)

A diff centre? Front or rear?

I am guessing - part of the cooling system? (It is metal - not rubber)

    Values and..?

A pitman arm, an oil/air breather, top of a swivel bush and...?

    A distributor cap:

    Rocker arm assembly?

A rear light, rubber for a pedal, bottle jack. The arm doesn't fit this bottle jack... Is this a Series 1 jack?

    Another distributor?

This shock is actually labelled beford:

A speedo cable - but looks to new to be for a Series 1?

I am guessing that these are lights from a bedford:

What is this? It has Lucas written on it - the end turns, and appears to have three settings:

    Maybe a beford pedal assembly?

    Cheers,
    GG.

    May gets a tub

May started first try, so I drove her out of the shed to give her a quick wash (nothing fancy).

    Before:

    And after:

She currently doesn't want to start - so I must have got something electrical under the bonnet wet...

The bonnet was down (I certainly didn't hose out the engine bay) - the fuel pump runs but won't fire... I've opened the bonnet and will let her drive off for a few hours.

Perhaps it's just her way of protesting the wash..

    Cheers,
    GG.

Yeah - I wasn't 100% happy with the side mirrors either, but they are practical. The strange thing is - there are NO holes in the guards to suggest that there were once wing mirrors.. I'm still undecided if I should remove the side mirrors (which will leave holes) and replace them with standard wing mirrors (which are next to useless anyway!)

I want to try and keep the vehicle "as-is" - apart from mechanical work, and a few tidy up's...

    Cheers,

Nice looking S1 and yes to fuel pumps, fusebox and voltage regulator, and the stork with the 3 position switch on it is the indicators. It clamps to the steering column.

It had 2 x 2500kg straps and 2 x 1000Kg straps on a vehicle weighing 1300Kg - it didn't move a mm during the 6 hour trip and would have stayed firmly attached to the trailer even if I'd rolled it in a ditch. May - 86" Series 1

Door checks. Standard is nothing, doors open 180 degrees and can be just lifted off at that.

The rear axle/hub looks like a Series 1.

Fuel pumps are contemporary SU ones, probably off it, but they were fitted to a lot of others.

    Carby looks correct

Starters look correct, but again, there were similar ones used on a lot of vehicles.

Distributor - could be, not clear.

Steering box and draglink does look correct.

Not a fuse box, its a voltage regulator - looks correct.

Diff looks correct, but could be from any of a wide range of Rover and Landrover vehicles 1932-2016. Count the teet - May should be 4.7:1

I don't recognise the cooling system part, but I'm not too familiar with S1 these days.

Valves, pushrods, generator stay, and I feel I should recognise some of the other bits, but I don't!

Next one includes an accelerator bellcrank and links.

Distributor cap and rocker arm assembly look correct.

Jack is definitely not Rover, looks more modern. The numberplate light could be. No pedal rubbers on Series 1.

    Distributor looks correct

Shock labelled bedford does not mean it is, and also it could fit both.

Speedo looks to have wrong gearbox end connection for a Series Landrover.

The lights are certainly not off a Landrover!

Lucas item is a steering column light switch, definitely not off any Landrover.

    Neither is the pedal.
