Compatibilities between Series 1 and Series II engines 2.0 petrol engines

    Hi all,
I hope this is not a too dumb question.
I have a 1953 80" Australian assembled Land that I am restoring. From the wisdom of this group, I believe that my car originally had a 2.0 litre siamese bore engine. However, during 1957, Land Rover replaced the block with a spread bore block, transferred any compatible parts across and fitted new bits where required by the block change.

So in effect I have a 1957 Spreadbore 2.0 litre petrol motor, with an invented engine number that cannot be used for parts selection.

A lot of suppliers now only carry Series II parts and upwards. So I am trying to determine if I can safely order engine parts that are listed with companies such as SC Parts in the UK, for a Series II 2.0 lite petrol and have them fit into my effective 1957 Spreadbore 2.0 litre petrol?

    Can anyone advise?

Some of the parts are the same (or interchangeable) but I don't know which. I suggest several approaches :-

    1. Contact suppliers that advertise Series 2 2.0l parts

    2. Join the Series 1 club (UK) and seek help there

    3. Obtain a parts book for your engine and inquire by part number.

People like those will have pretty much all the parts you need for a S1 engine.

Cox & Turner seem nice people and offer good service, but are not always in my price range.
For example, I recently asked for a quotation on a water pump.
Cox & Turner quoted £69.00 plus around £30 for delivery.
At todays exchange rate, that comes to AUD$181. I can buy the same part from All Four x4 for AUD$110.
It pays to shop locally when you can.

But will it fit without modifications ? It also pays to ask previous buyers before you buy cheap parts.

    S1 engine

Just a comment or 2 that may be useful:
It is my understanding that the only 2L petrol engine used in the Series 2 was a few very early cars and the engine is the spread bore from the S1.
All spread bore 2L engines are the same other than some early units that might have a small gudgeon pins and apparently 3 ring pistons not that I have ever seen ether in standard original motors.
I have also had problems with cheap Indian water pumps. "Not from the supplier mentioned"

I would just like to add that the engine number of the S1 spread bore engines used in early S2 SWB is 1418.....

    Jeff,

I get your point, however I personally prefer dealing with people who have proven track records regarding knowledge and experience and get 'packages' instead sourcing parts from all over. Sure there are restorers who have enough knowledge to mix and shuffle but if it comes to Series 1 engines I am not one of them. In the end your wallet decides. Restoring to good or above levels is not cheap. m
