Hi - Is it a genuine Station Wagon or a basic with a station wagon top - if a SW it will be one of the rarest Land Rovers in Australia. There are a few 86" SWB Stationwagons but if genuine yours will be only the 4th 88" I have discovered in Aust. If was built as a diesel then even rarer. Up to now I did not even know the diesel had been fitted to the SWB SW.

The 88" series 1 was introduced in late 1956 as the 57 Model Year with the extra 2" in the wheelbase to accomodate the diesel engine. The only 57MY Landrover not to get the diesel was the 107" LWB Station Wagon as its chassis was not extended.

So if it is a genuine SW and built with the diesel then the vehicle is well worth preserving. Does it have all the SW fittings inside - like luxury trim, door cards and locks, four individual seats in the rear and four airvents in the roof?

So please confirm whether it is an 86" or an 88" and whether it is a genuine SW - and yes the 88"/109" series 1s did have the diesel as an option.

    Cheers

    Garry

There is no sign of lux trim.
Ok that Vin Number is missing what would seem to be the last number - I entered your chassis number into Calvin (Clifton Scientific Text Services, the Netherlands) and the number does not work - I added a 0 through to 9 as an additional last number and they all come up as 56, 88" Petrol. So check the chassis number.

On that basis I would say you are correct it is not a genuine diesel but Calvin will tell you if you enter the correct number.

The engine would seem to be a 2litre series 2 diesel engine (146xxxxxx Series II diesel 2052cc)

While not original, the two litre diesel is now very rare. This engine, while basically the same as the 2.25 engine, has major differences, notably in having wet sleeves. As such, it is worth holding on to, although parts that are special to the engine will be very hard to find and expensive.

Most of these engines were scrapped and replaced by the 2.25 when they needed overhaul.

Yes, the 2.25 was noticeably quieter, apparently due to small changes in the shape of the precombustion chamber!
