    Lube system restrictors 52 2 litre

    My 80" 2 ltr once upon a time had a huge AC oil filter which is no longer procurable, I have replaced it with a generic spin on. However, in replacing the block unions with new ones to adapt to the new pipe work it occurred to me that what I thought had been blockages may have been manufactured with small internal diameter to act as flow restrictors similar in action to the restrictor in the head banjo bolt. Each of the block unions have a discrete LR P/N

    In all cases such restrictors would reduce flow to up the back pressure to big end and main bearings and rockers, OR lack of such restrictors would increase flow through the filter reducing flow and pressure to bearings etc.

    At this point turning up and fitting 1/16" bore restrictors not a problem.

    Comment? Knowledge?

    Engine finally getting close to being "closed up".

    I am pretty certain that the original filter was a bypass filter, that is, connected between the main oil gallery and the sump, rather than a full flow filter between the pump and the oil gallery. As such it needs to have a flow restrictor to prevent almost total loss of oil pressure to everything else - the filter you have fitted is designed to have as low a resistance to flow as possible.

    But I am afraid I cannot comment on the desired aperture of the restrictor. Hopefully someone else can help.

    the size of the restrictor needed now that you have changed the type of oil filter and housing, will relate to the engine oil pressure. Fit a guage and see what the oil pressure is and adjust the restrictor to increase/decrease the pressure as required. It will probably take only a small difference in size the change the pressure.
    I am interested on what results you get , it would be great if you can post the results.

    agreed, Ta suspect it will be 1/16" same as the head restrictor.

    Rick,

    From memory, there is a restrictor in the small feed pipe union to maintain sufficient pressure to the bearings. I'll head out to the shed later and mearure one for you.

    Rick,

    I had a look at my 80". The male outlet spigot on the AC filter has has a 3.1mm bore and the nickel plated inlet nipple has a 1.5mm bore to restict the oil flow from the gallery feed pipe. I hope this information helps. In addition, the banjo bolt on the rocker feed pipe on the back of the cylider head has a 1.2mm restrictor jet in it.
