Thread: Steering wheel repairs

I used one of those epoxy puttys on my old cortinas wheel years ago.

They were only new on the market back then but it worked well and was easy to sand into the right shape but then I just put a cover over it but there is no reason you couldnt paint it in 2 pack.

I am at the same stage as you Wayne, but in my case there is no plastic at all left on the wheel!

I was wondering about a fibreglass based filler for mine, but I welcome suggestions from anyone who has experience with this sort of repair.

MC Rover; can you remember a brand name? I see that POR make a steering wheel epoxy, but I am wondering if it would be suitable by itself?

My brother-in-law (forgive him as he drives a cruiser) gave me some Loctite Metal Magic Steel - 10 min repair epoxy. He thought that it was appropriate as I drove a series Landrover. It did come in handy tho when I fixed the steering wheel on olute some time ago.
Dries bloody hard and was handled well to shape it to the wheel etc. Regardless, I never thanked him. But the stuff worked on cracks and chips very well.

its a common problem with older vehicles of many types.

I've been using 2 part araldite on the cracks and sanding it .. then I paint the wheel rim with black SEPTONE vinyl paint.. its used for painting vinyl seats and comes in a aerosol can. . Your local Super crap auto store sells it .. it's funny stuff but it wears well . I'm not advertising anything .. I'm just a backyard restorer like you.

I think the early series 2 steering wheels will fit , but the horn contact setup is different . I've got one here , but the spline is a very tight fit on the 80" spline end.

On another topic, I spotted a very new looking Rover car today with a 75 badge on it .. looked very modern and flash .. Does Rover still make cars ? Or is it a case of badge engineering .. a badge swap from another auto maker.
