    Front End Question & Horn location

    hi All,

    Can someone pls explain to me what the extra bits are welded to the front chassis for, im guessing its not original. do i grind off the LR or was this an optional extra for a winch perhaps! Has 5 holes seems to support something as per pic.

    Also where is the right location for a S1 1955 86 inch horn, i seem to have two located one on the driver side inner mudguard top near huge air filter and the other behind the grille and in front of the radiator lower passenger side bolted to the front chassis crossmember. Im assuming the later is the correct position and the other is wrong? Help please...

    The brackets on the chassis front cross-member appear to be for capstan winch mounting. And excuse me for a guess at this point, there are two lengths of the mounting plate and I'm think this one is to space out the shorter one so it sits correctly for the drive shaft and on the front of the bumper.

    The 86" had the horn mounted on a hole tapped into the blanking plate over the LHS steering relay hole.

    I think your right there diana, has had a sereis II-III capstan winch fitted at some stage (used the angle plates as spacers so it fits right on the bumper)

    My 1958 Series 2 has the horn located inside the passenger wing.

    Horn Position

    See the attached photo of a partially dismantled Len ('54 86"). You can see the horn still in its position bolted to the blanking plate for the steering relay on the LHS of the front crossmember.

    Horn

    As with the above posters I have 3 1955 86" and the horn (small type) is on the said plate on the two green ones but on the blue and it is a factory blue the horn (large type) is mounted to the underside of the bonnet hinge bolts as is my 1955 107"' interestingly I have a very early 1954 107" and the horn (small type) is on the blanking plate.
    As for the winch mount I would say the installer had never seen rivet bolts and this was his way of mounting the back of the plate.
    I think the difference between S1 and S2 is only about 15mm.

    OK good point Aaron maybe he did not know how to install them?
    I have a problem with the S2 theory, the distance between the front of the front cross member on a S2 is about 375mm and S1 around 345mm thus if the base plates are different then the S2 would be longer thus the spacer is the wrong way.
    But there are other capstan winches, I haven’t got a Rang Rover so I can’t measure the distance on one of those, though I to know of a 107 wagon with a Range winch fitted.

    PS the above distances do differ from Landy to Landy as the bumper mount can alter it be 10 to 20mm.
