I gave a 2 litre block away the other day to someone that likes them.
They have an alloy timing cover and the block has 4 little holes in the LHS one for each pot to drain any coolant away that leaks past the liner O rings. If you cant find these holes its a 2.25 litre.
Also the 2 litre has a fuel filter mounted near the water pump.

123rover50 good info, got the alloy cover would the holes be drivers or passenger side, passenger side has a cast valley running from water pump nearly all the way back with some threaded bungs, filters on drivers side top above timing cover, i suppose its near the water pump outlet. the holes would be becouse of the wet sleeve bores i guess would they be about 5mm, sheds pretty dark might see better in the morning.

That would be the diesel landy man (me) I have many 2.25 diesel engines, but only one and a half 2 ltr diesels. Like everyone has said parts are hard to get and they are not the best diesel engine to have. A good clue to a 2ltr diesel is the inlet manifold.

thanx for the pic and info, intake manifold is the same ex is differant, but be more veriations in ex manifolds i recon, if theres a noticable differance in the intake than by ur pic iv got a 2ltr. i suppose ur advice and most is only worth it for a fully restored rover of the period.

The 2.25 intake manifold is quite different - the feed from the aircleaner is into the front end of the manifold via an elegant curve rather than into the middle. Part of the modifications that got the extra rpm and power from the larger engine.

Note that the 2 litre engine came in for 1957 Series 1, so it would not just be for Series 2 collectors.
