Thread: Wire-spoked steering wheel presentation

Hi Drifter,

I restored my banjo-type steering wheel a few years ago. I just polished up the wires with some chrome paste stuff - came up really well.

Mine looked awesome when I first did it but the paint is starting to crack around the rim - theres no flex in the paint. I've just ordered a leather stitch-on cover for mine from Pangolian4x4, that will cover up the cracked paint!

The POR15 stuff may be the answer for the flexing rim - not sure.

I have just painted the hub - after sanding it down to bare metal.

I'll get some stainless cleaner and see how that goes.

I don't have any cracks in my rim - but it is fairly rough - quite severely pitted all around - and where the rim joins with the spokes it is a bit messy - almost like someone has used epoxy to clean it up sometime in the past.

I was looking at those wheel covers - and may yet order one - but wanted to see if I could get it looking a bit better first.

As said, the damn thing will flex so 'ordinary' paint will crack.

SuperCheap Auto stock Septone, I've bought some previously in the Queanbeyan branch at the roundabout at the end of the main street away from the ACT.

Last time I was in there asking, they sold me a can of 3M Vinyl paint.

I'll go back and ask for the Septone stuff.

I made a restoration work of the steering wheel, the plastic material , was polish with black shoes polish paste, then polished a lot of times with a cloth, the metal (banjo) part was polished with "fresh coke" and a kitchen sponge, with the green side.
