1959 SWB Basic "Madge" repower with early 2.25l

spent a couple of hours under madge today doing some maintenance on the handbrake assembly

sadly the oil seal at the back of the transfer case has decided tto leak after all these years so i'll have to sort that out in due course.

cleaned it all up and readjusted everything in the hope of keeping it going while i get the parts and the time :p

went for a drive and kept the handbrake on just a touch and warmed the shoes up to get them grabbing again..

can park it in my driveway again [thumbsupbig]

Check the nut 1" under the Uni joint that is the rear output shaft,should be at 80lbs on tension wrench,any looser it will allow shaft to float and that will give you a leak through the seal,also if the shaft has a slight groove at the seal "speedie sleeve"is your friend.[bigsmile1]

Probably better to overhaul an old one, the quality of the **itpart ones is questionable (probably goes for any aftermarket unit).

mainly bearings

but bottom spline is well worn

The bushes are replaceable, as are the seals. I don't know whether you can get replacement shafts or if they are any good if you can. Should not be too hard to find a S/H complete relay though if the spline is too badly worn, and overhaul it if necessary. They are interchangeable right through to the end of S3, so you shoould be able to find a much newer one.

If someone is about to throw a chassis with the relay rusted in place it isn't hard to get the shaft out, then fit that in your relay body. Better still get a S/H relay, overhaul it and swap it out with yours.

Bushes don't seem to wear that much but depends if it's had oil in it or whether it's been left full of water.
Locally I can get springs, thrust washers, gaskets, steel washers for under the spring ends & the split Tufnol bushes. I keep most of these parts 'in-stock' which helps my wife confirm that I'm a hoarder.
The bolts with undersized heads I had to get from the UK (I have seen cap head screws used instead).
Get seals from a bearing supplier rather than a LR supplier.

Not sure if you'll be able to get a NOS shaft, most will be aftermarket.

I've repaired 6 or 7 over the years. I've sometimes set the shaft up in a lathe and skimmed the seal land because of pitting (could use a speedi sleeve), never had a leak.
My Series I relay hasn't been overhauled. When the oil 'fell out' I dropped the bottom cover, fitted a new seal & gasket and put it back together......one day I'll get round to removing the top cover and replace the top seal (to stop water getting in).
