    1960 88 wagon

Hi everyone, this is my landrover that i recently purchased. Im new to landrovers so i have been lurking around on this excellent site looking for information. I have been chatting with Lotz-A-Landies along with consulting the owners manual that came with it to determine exactly what she is. The previous owner purchased her when she was a couple years old when he was working up in Port Moresby, when he came back to Oz her brought her with him and has kept her the whole time. He cared for her quite well really and she was kept under cover when not being driven so there seems to be very little damage from the weather. According to the owners manual, she is a "deluxe" model, coming from the factory with a whole list of options including the hard top, rear station wagon type door, 7 seats, de-luxe trim including roof lining, floor coverings, trim panels with arm rests, private locks and window catches, she has the original water temp/oil press gauge, for some reason two indicator levers, one on the steering column and one on the dash, spare wheel carrier on the bonnet and on the rear door, folding step for the rear door, lifting and towing rings, tropical roof and alpine windows, the rest i dont really know about. Up until yesterday she was still registerd and occasionally driven. She is a petrol engine too. Any info you can provide as to where to look for rust or common issues would be great.

Look for rust primarily in the bulkhead, round the pedals, and near the hinges and vents. Also in the door frames and the chassis, especially anywhere that mud can accumulate, and the radiator support along the bottom.

There are no particular issues, other than those that arise from the fact that it is fifty years old. Because of the age, check anything rubber for condition - radiator hoses, flexible brake hoses, brake seals, tie rod end boots, this sort of thing. But general condition will depend on mileage and how it has been looked after.

If it runs well and everything works, well and good. If there are problems, often a search will find it has already been answered.

When looking for information, note that a lot of bit are common between Series 2, 2a and 3, so the answer may be in other sections.

If it came originally from Port Moresby, it would be interesting to see whether it was originally assembled in Australia or is a UK model. The chassis number would give this information. If Australian assembled, I would expect it to have a Pressed Metal Corporation tag on the bulkhead near the one with transfer lever instructions. My guess is that it was not assembled in Australia.

    More pictures would be appreciated.

    Hi Phill

Now that I can see a picture, what a great find.

To answer part of John's question, we have already checked and the vehicle is a UK assembled Export model, which AFAIK all the 88" Station Wagons of the era were.

Thanks for showing us, and more photos would be welcome!

Very nice find! Looks as if it just needs a bit of a polish and some upholstery repairs.
