Thanks to some motivation from DennisS1 (and some very expensive quotes) I decided to try and tidy-up my steering wheel myself...

Here are some before pictures:

I masked up the Gal - so that I could paint it with a Hammered Finish paint:

Both door bottoms have been painted now also:



I painted the clutch plate cover while at it-


Exhaust Manifold nuts/bolts/washers. Before & Cleaned:

And I started cleaning the rear diff too:

Firstly - I have cleaned the Skirt brackets (kindly provided by Wrinkle Arthur).
Before / After Cleaning:



I cleaned the Drivers Side Engine Mount - ready for paint:



I removed the Oil Filter -



Cleaned the bolts/washers:


After a few hours of cleaning -



Question to all - should I paint it? I was thinking that I will paint it Satin Black, but it's kind of sad to paint it now that it looks all pretty? Then again - it will just get dirty...



What do people think?

could you leave it for the first oil change and then see?

It depends upon how original you want it.. was "rust" the original colour? The filter housing on my 2.25D was, I believe, blue originally. Maybe just hit that nice shiny steel with some Penetrol and see how you go from there?

i think i have asked this before but what do you use to clean your parts besides elbow grease

I don't know how to do it but I think it would look nice with a cadmium coating and then with a coating of clear lacquer to keep it.

My main cleaning tools are:

1) An electric drill with a plastic wheel brush. The red one on the left is fantastic - lasts quite a while. The blue one on the right works well but they never seem to last.
They are available at Bunnings. Here is a picture:


2) I also use a metal bowl, with Diggers Degreaser in it. With plenty of tooth brushes to get in those hard-to-get at places.

3) I buy bags of white rags from the hardware store. You can see how things are cleaning, and SWMBO didn't like me using her tea-towels...

4) Above all - lots and lots of patience and elbow grease!

One day I should buy a parts cleaner... And a Sand Blaster. And a Spray Booth. And an Engine Crane. And an Engine Stand.. And a Welder...

Wrinklearthur - I have been researching cadmium paint, and it mostly seems to be a process like chroming.. How would that be for some bling on a Landy!

I have previously used WhiteKnights Clear Guard paint - but I'm not sure if engine heat would kill it. I am tempted to try VHT SP184 Clear Coat on it...

I wonder if other people have tried VHT SP184? (It is a clear coat for wheels but lists temps up to 121c)

Maybe worth a try....
