    Update

    Hi All,

Well spent most of today cleaning the garage - there was piles and piles of dirt from all of the sanding/cleaning that I have been up to.

    I re-cleaned the horn cover:

I then painted the horn cover:

Here are pictures of before/after cleaning of a shackles:

    Here are the painted shackles:

A cleaned drum (and painted after):

I have been reading up on the magic properties of molasses. So I went out and bought some, mixed it with water, and am seeing how it goes. One thing is for sure - it's sticky stuff:

    Grey Ghost,

With the molasses solution I think you need to have the parts completely submerged. Having it only half in will possibly cause damage at the interface between the air & molasses solution.

It can take some time to remove the rust and you'll get black hands scrubbing off the residue but it's something that can be working away in the background while you do something else. Once removed, scrubbed & rinsed you need to dry it as quickly as possible and paint it before it rusts.

That reminds me I have a couple of rail spikes that have been suspended in the bucket for a few months.......

If you use hot water it works very quickly

As Colin says; submerge it completely and check at least once every 2 days,

    Update - Horn

    Hi All,

Not a lot done this week - busy with work.

I did pull apart the horn and clean it - which took approximately 3 hours.

    I pulled apart the horn:

    Horn body outside (before)

    Horn body outside (after)

    Horn plate (before)

    Horn plate (after)

    Horn bracket (before)

    Horn bracket (after)

And I had previously painted the horn cover:

    Update

    Hi Gav,

Does it still work - that's your department mate!

(I don't even know if it worked before I removed it).

I will try and get some pictures of the wiring loom, on initial inspection it appears to be in multiple sections (head-lights, main body, and another section).

    Regards,
    The Grey Ghost!

    Nice work GG!

I hope you don't mind me mentioning it, but I think it would be safer to replace the brake pipes with new bundy tubing. Once they get as rusty as yours, there is very little metal left, especially where the deeper pits will be.

Any pit in the pipe creates a stress-raiser, which means the life of the pipe will be quite short and if it leaks, you will lose all of your braking ability rather quickly

Tubing and new flare nuts are quite cheap as are bending tools; however; a double-flaring tool, which is essential, can be a bit pricey,

    Cheers Charlie

Guess who's got access to a double flaring tool now... Found a good one at one of our workshops which hardly gets used.
