Top work Ghost! You will be finished long before I am

There is no need to paint inside the sump, but if you do it would need to be a heat-proof paint that won't come off and bugger the lubrication system, and of course your engine as well

Soak it in caustic-soda solution and you may discover that your paint is actually oil-tarnish,

I am a massive fan of these old trucks and their history and heritage. Ghost i find it extremely hard to believe you are just 'a beginner'. You look like you have been doing this your entire life! You are a seasoned pro!

The amount of time an effort you are putting into the smallest of parts is truly inspiring. I wish i had your patience I keep avoiding big projects and telling myself i don't have the equipment etc. And here you are restoring an old school landy with elbow grease and molasses

Needless to say i am very impressed and cant wait to see the old girl on the road

I'm getting one of these one day. A day a very long time from now...

The sooner the better, you will find it quite fulfilling. Occasionally frustrating, but largely fulfilling!

    nice work

Nice work with the patch. Of course you are in good company, are you not? Didn't Rover even use that approach for example to cover the hole in the bulkhead for the steering column on LH/RH drive models.

Just read through your post and am completely blow away with the job you are doing! Absolutely Fantastic!
One question on the paint, are you using a spray gun or spray packs? Either way it looks great!
Cannot wait for the finished product!

    Hi Flying,

I am using spray cans - if money was no object I would pay to get the thing sprayed professionally!

I have found that to get the best results (as with many things in life) - it all comes down to the preparation.. The more prep the better.

I tend to clean off all dust, mud and grime from the panel.
Sand the panel back to bare metal.
    Clean it
    Etch prime it
Spray in a clean/dust free/dry area, re-coat according to the recommended drying time.
    I always do multiple coats.
I only ever do one panel at a time.
Move the finished panel to another room or cover it - to protect it from over-spray and damage.

    Cheers!

Got to Ghost's place this week to give him a hand for an hour - sorry I had to cut and run mate - anyway, Mr Ghost has been very busy, and it was great to see an update first hand.. Roger is progressing very well, and I don't think it will be too long before things start to go back together.

Detail is great, and the colours really look good. This will be one one sweet ride when all done.

Keep up with the motivation mate, you have come soooo far.

    Cheers - Gav.

    Small Update

    Hi All,

    Only a small update today...

    Painted - Petrol Tank:

Thanks to Super Gav (bacicat) the engine is now in a temporary cradle...

    Engine - before:

And after hours and hours of cleaning and masking (ready for paint):

Next step is to paint the engine, sand/clean/paint the replacement sump, and then replace all of the gaskets and seals on the engine and put the various bits and pieces back on it! Hopefully somebody will remember how it all goes back together!

    (Hint, hint - Super Gav!)

Chassis cleaning, sanding and priming continues in the meantime...

    Update

    Hi All,

I bought a 2nd hand sump to replace my exiting one on "Roger".

Here it is - before I have done anything to it:

After 3 weeks of soaking in molasses:

If you look closely, you can see that it has been painted on the inside - the paint is flaking off...

Most of today has been spent sanding/cleaning the sump. Here it is ready for paint:

I am going to paint the inside/outside with VHT flat black - which I figure is good for 288c - surely the inside of the sump won't get that hot...

That it for this weekend. Cheers.
