    Air Cleaners

I have procured a 2.25 petrol engine. My intention is to reco it & replace the Holden EVENTUALLY. It's a late S3 & has an alternator thereby making the conversion back from a Holden much easier wiring-wise!

My problem is the spot for the orig air cleaner is now occupied by a VH44 brake booster which I would like to keep.

Sure, I could relocate the VH44 over under the passenger mudguard (and probably will!) but I DO have a Donaldson air cleaner that used to be on a VW Kombi Camper.

It's not too big a unit & may fit under the bonnet poking a bit into the passenger wheel well a bit but I could mount it ON the guard too sending the inlet pipe thru the guard.

    Any ideas/comments?

The VW is a significantly smaller engine than the Rover engine, so the first question would be - is it big enough? Your comment that it is "not too big" suggests this may be a worry. The Donaldson probably does a better job of cleaning the air, but may restrict it a bit much.

I would not be enthused about a mudguard mounted unit, mainly because of access to the engine. It couold also run foul of increasing fuss about driver visibility and pedestrian safety. The 2a I owned with a VH44 had it in the LH mudguard as you suggest.

you have to be very careful about putting them on the mudguards as the insepctors can get very fussy about it

My IIA has a hilux air cleaner mounted inside (not on top) of the LH guard. It was a tight fit, and required some massaging of the steel panel which runs between the firewall and the guard top, but it fits.

I had a Donaldson air filter mounted under the guard of a Series 3 ex army I had years ago when I fitted an Isuzu 4BD1 & even with 900/16s on forward control rims it never got rubbed by the tyres , & was pretty accessable too.

any chance of a photo? I've been contemplating something of the like... but I was going to use a Patrol primary filter inside the bay (front left). Patrol primary filters are very pricy though hence why there is no progress on that....

I have the front end dismantled and the engine out at the moment, but can take some pics of the bits if it would help?

This is the only relevant pic I have:

The inlet to the aircleaner is directly below the snorkel.

Interesting... you dont have the demister inlet on the side there.... I like the look of your snorkel and I'd like to have an end result similar.... I will have to have a bit more of a think
