Out of curiosity, is a broken gear stick a common problem?
I guess anything gets tired with age though ...

Actually one thing I do remember is the S2 bent stick hits the S3 dash in reverse.
I've got a 6cyl gearstick in my 4cyl IIA (I actually prefer it to the 4cyl) and it doesn't even get close to hitting the dash. It's the straightish one.
that straight one came out of my s3 swb 4cyl. I didnt drive it enough to compare it but i do remember in my s3 ute that it did hit the dash in reverse and it was quite annoying
pulled one apart yesterday and gave it a good old clean up.
things to remember when doing this.
wear glasses as there is a spring that fling bits and pieces when you take the circlip off.
a second pair of hands makes this job a lot easier it took me many of curse words to get that bloody circlip back on.
here is a few photos
here is what it looks inside before the spring goes in

also while on the topic does anyone know how to pack these things to send i have it all wrapped up but does it have to be in a box for auspost?
