Have you backed the shoes off with the adjuster? They may be catching on the rim of the drum. Sometimes drums stick to the face of the hub, so a few taps with a hammer between the studs will loosen it - put the nuts back on temporarily to protect the threads.

Springs will probably be available from Paddock, Craddock, or Four Wheel drives - Google the part no. I can't remember where the other end goes, but have a look around the crossmember for a small hole,

Hi Tom, as mentioned, back the adjusters off, then you may need to give it some persuasion with a hammer tapping around the edges. There is probably rust and other crap holding the drum on around the bolts.

Hey G.G, you will get an idea from this image where the H/brake spring connects, there should be a small tab similar to the one in your image, but the other tab is down low on the T/case mount

Thanks GG. Am due to refit my hand brake today, to exactly how it was before I dismantled it, which is without a return spring. Now I know I need one. The problem with restoring an old car (when you have no mechanical knowledge) is that you hope most things were correct before you started.
