How difficult is it to actually engage a gear once the clutch is depressed?
When you release the pedal, how quickly does it return?
Pardon me for asking the obvious, but are you certain that the transfer lever is engaged properly?
Hi All, It's been a while but a new arrival today!! 1970 Series 2A SWB 2.25 petrol. Found her at an auction locally and when I saw the number checking her out thought it would all be in vain. Turns out they didn't bid and I picked up a peach for $1600, very straight, very original, minimal rust and runs like a Swiss clock. So I thought it would be an easy drive her onto the trailer pickup, wrong!
Extremely heavy clutch pedal and after a gear is selected and clutch comes out....nothing. When I say heavy pedal I mean totally not normal and can barely get it to the floor.
I am just hoping someone can give me a lead so I dont waste time. I am thinking clutch slave. I dont know the history of the vehicle but I think it may have been stored for a few months.
Any help/advice much appreciated.
Pics to follow tomorrow.

Thanks for the quick reply! Gears are easily selected with pedal in out out, a very small grind as it goes in but nothing there when the pedal comes back out. Pedal release is fairly normal.
Must admit I didnt check the transfer lever, I will have a look, but that aside, that clutch pedal takes me a good 2-4 secs to get depressed, and my left leg is no stranger to a heavy pedal..........

Liberal WD40 on the clutch pedal pivot bush should fix the first one

As Phil suggested, but could be the master cylinder, although if it were that rusty internally, it is unlikely it would work at all. Slight possibility of other problems.
The "no drive" is most likely that the red transfer lever is in neutral, but other possibilities include a broken rear half axle (in which case it would drive if in 4wd and free wheel hubs (if fitted) engaged).
But note that if it is not driving, for whatever reason, the gears will engage with minimal noise even if the clutch is not disengaging, so you most likely have a faulty master cylinder. This is very likely if the vehicle has not been used for some time.

Thanks Phil and John.
I dont believe its a clutch pedal sieze up as it feels hydraulic as the pedal goes slowly down. I will lubricate as advised first then have a go at the master cylinder.
Will let you know how it goes and hopefully post pics today!
Ditto to all points.
Your problem/s could be coming from a number of sources. Try just going from start to finish through the "circuit" from the moment you depress the pedal to what should be happening at the other end:
- Is the pedal, independent of any other issues, able to move freely on its pivot?
- Is the pushrod to the master cylinder moving freely? How much play is there between it and the piston? Is there fluid in the reservoir? Any bubbles?
- How does the flexible line look/feel?
- When the clutch pedal is depressed, how much movement is there from the slave cylinder rod? Does it engage the shaft to the release fork properly? Is there any problem with the pin on the shaft?
- Is the transfer properly engaged?
- Any other faults downstream in the drivetrain?
I know that seems to provide more questions, but following that sort of line should give you some answers.
Cheers,
John
flex hose failure.
crack the nipple off on the slave cylinder and see what happens.
if you get bugger all flow out of it after an initial burst with it open and you pushing the pedal down, leave it open, select 1/lo and start it in gear.

Thank you all for taking the time to reply!
It was the flexible hose between the master and slave. Replaced it, bled it, drove it!!
Its a little beauty, 4wd, hi/lo range, sounds sweet as a nut. Just a little tidy up with a couple of electrical issues and in for a RWC next week.
I havn't seen a 2a in this nick for a long time and am totally rapt with it.
Still no pics as we were busy testing it out this arvo soI will get some on shortly.
Thanks again!!
