It is a pre-1967 model, probably 58-59 by the vent screw handles, and certainly looks to be in good shape. It is difficult to tell just from the photos, but it would seem to have at least a few minor modifications such as the steering column stalk that seems to have replaced the arm with the horn button, and it would be interesting to know why the brackets halfway down each side of the tail gate.

The top is, of course, non-standard, as are the wing mirrors. The door tops are missing, as are the handles on the rear crossmember outriggers.

The major issues for one of these are chassis or bulkhead rust - certainly none obvious, but then it could be just putty and paint - and mechanical neglect - lack of oil leaks could indicate either meticulous maintenance or lack of oil, for example in the swivels, and unwise modifications - lack of an under bonnet picture means we have no idea what engine it has. If it is a 1958 one that still has the 2 litre engine it is a rarity, and this makes a significant difference to the value.

As for value, I have no idea what the Indonesian market for old Landrovers is - I suspect that is so small that there is no way to give a sensible guess.

If you look at it from the Australian market perspective, the price is near the top of the range for such a vehicle here, and from that you would have to deduct the costs of shipping and import. (If it is a 1958 with the original 2l this would make a significant difference, but again, the market for these would be small).

A buyer here would expect either a hard top or canvas and door tops for that price, as well as a roadworthy. The top and door tops would be a couple of thousand, perhaps more (I don't know what a set of hoops cost or it they would be needed - hard to see what is under that top).

    Hope this helps.

Can't tell for sure - they could be, but may be excessively messed about (e.g. those longitudinal tubes). The existing top may be quite good, but being non-standard reduces the "historical" part of the value, and hence the potential sale price. Probably irrelevant with a Series 3, very important with a Series 1, and Series 2 somewhere in between, with early Series 2, which this appears to be, closer to Series 1.

And, of course, the door tops may be available, just not fitted when the picture was taken.

    Hi NovaRover,

Interesting looking Landy. Any chance of checking out the chassis number? Look in the left rear-wheel well at the flat piece on the chassis above the rear spring hanger. The number will help identify the vehicle and therefore its age and value.

Yes, rust in the chassis and bulkhead would be the real worry for me, especially in a wet climate.

I would call it expensive, but hard to be sure at this point. As John says, if it is a 2litre donk, making her an early series 2 (1958) that would add to the rarity of the old girl.

    cheers,

    Garry

That only applies to Australian assembled Landrovers. If Home market, it should be on the RH dumb iron, but could be anywhere if it is assembled elsewhere. In any case, it is likely to be on the gearlever instruction plate on the firewall in front of the gearlever. The only catch with this is that it is only screwed on, and could easily have come from another vehicle.

    Seen service

    Very likely ex-Police or ex-Military.

There are more Series Land Rovers around Indonesia than you might expect. Most suffer the usual setbacks....

Hi everyone just got back from Indonesia.
Could not believe the overwhelming wealth of knowledge that is out there amongst this group of Land Rover lovers. thank you all so much for sharing your knowledge and thoughts.

The owner has told me that he does have side door window panels, he assures me that they are in great condition.

Unfortunately I did not see the condition of the firewall panel for rust but I did go over the car and I could not find any rust. There was cases of some fibreglass bog delimitation due to ding repairs there did not seem to be any rust behind the bog.

The owners is looking for the serial number for me and I have asked him if he could take a photo of the motor for me. Which I will post as soon as I receive it.

The motor seemed to be in lovely condition it just purred I could not believe how smoothly it idled and ran when, I first met with the owner he just started it cold and did not even touch the accelerator and it just started first go and idled so smoothly and effortlessly. on driving the vehicle I was very surprised with the smoothness of gear section.

could anybody help me with a possible link of some prices or sales of Series II Land Rovers is in Australia

Ooops sorry about the typos in the last quote.

The owner called from Indonesia today and gave me some more info in regards to numbers etc.
    Year 1959
    Serieal No 142 901 781
    Engine No 151 926 490
not sure what this number is as I had trouble understanding him,
    R595915MPSTDR

He told the papers say the engine is 3878cc but this doesn't make sense to me as visually the engine did not seem that large , it was just a tiny little motor
